The Raheen project represents the restoration of a four-bedroom residence situated in Kew, Melbourne, capturing the allure of 1970s mid-century living. Crafted by Chancellor & Patrick Architects, the renovation prioritized preserving the authentic character of the home, seamlessly blending old and new design elements. Raheen's brilliance lies in its modern reinterpretation and homage to mid-century design principles, maintaining dynamic nostalgia and original features like German blown glass chandeliers and wall-hung ashtrays. The meticulously restored contrasting brickwork takes center stage, infusing rich tones that seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces. This design philosophy extends to the bathroom, where floor-to-ceiling stacked tiles echo the mid-century aesthetic.
Every detail was thoughtfully curated, from the natural rattan and rolled-edged Corian stonework to the hanging fireplace and authentic furniture selections. The incorporation of rich warm walnut finishes, complemented by mixed metal accents, enhances the entire home. These new elements act as bridges, harmonizing with existing key materials, such as the textured brickwork and cedar-clad vaulted ceilings.
Central to the project's objectives was the rejuvenation of the main living zones and kitchen, which, once characterized by low, dark, and dense atmospheres, underwent a meticulous rebalancing and re-arrangement. The introduction of light crazy paving stonework and carefully rendered walls maximizes natural light, creating bright, inviting spaces that frame breathtaking tree-lined views. Raheen stands as a respectful revitalization of the 1970s spirit, skillfully merging the past with contemporary luxury to craft a vibrant mid-century masterpiece.
