Grandview House

Balancing a captivating southern perspective with warm internal character, Grandview House overcomes the limitations of its former self. Situated on the southern side of Mona Vale headland, the tactful renovation is a display of Ian Bennett Design Studio’s aptitude for designing assuredly in a harsh coastal environment. Previously a cold and uninviting residence with minimal access to sunlight, the studio worked collaboratively with its clients, one of whom heads Northern Beaches Constructions, to rejuvenate the existing dwelling into a comfortable, contemporary family home which capitalises on tiered views of Mona Vale beach, Long Reef, and Manly. A board-form concrete façade defines the Grandview House approach, providing an initial impression of the reveal inside. Passing the threshold, the entrance is delineated by two voids in adjacency to a suspended walkway, allowing natural light to permeate deeper within the home. The unobstructed kitchen-dining-living space circulates seamlessly towards the expansive southern external living. Upstairs, two children’s bedrooms branch off from the walkway, whilst the southern side of the house encloses a master bedroom, ensuite, and an additional children’s bedroom. An open plan configuration accentuates the visual field, mitigating the sense of transition between spaces and encouraging residents to explore the home’s entirety. Considered voids to the east and west, complimented by apertures placed within the southern awning, draw an abundance of natural light into the residence, whilst louvre windows maximise natural ventilation. Grandview House presents an intuitive response to its site; a contemporary home that effortlessly captures natural light and inspiring southern views that bestow the house its namesake.
