Challenges:
Originally the Mooloolaba Yacht Club, this restoration and renovation project attempted to redefine the old ‘yachtie’ encompassing over 50 years of renovation layers. Mindful of monetary constraints, the primary focus was on repositioning the building location and business to become a refined hospitality offering for weddings, functions and special events on the Sunshine Coast. Working within a considerable venue size, internal planning focused on creating spaces they provided comfort and intimacy throughout service times. The refurbishment required comprehensive engagement and knowledge of the building code regulations to ensure compliance was met without over engineering.
Solutions:
Referencing international and Sydney seaside venues, the design incorporated a simplistic finishes and material palette. Select detailing was carefully considered with the use of simple, robust materials to promote reduced ongoing maintenance. The internal fit-out intentionally offers a variety of seating options, including booth seating, private dining and function spaces. A substantial lawn area with picket fencing was established overlooking the marina, resulting in an outdoor space suitable for families to enjoy and function overflow.
Impacts:
The Mooloolah River and Marina provides a picturesque backdrop to this uniquely Sunshine Coast venue, Pier 33. Boasting function spaces varying in size, events can be personalised with ease with the ability to cater for groups of all sizes including large scale sporting groups, corporate functions and weddings. Arguably a contributing factor to the charm of Mooloolaba, Pier 33 regular patrons continue to request their ‘usual’ spot which is a sentiment to the success of this venue.
